Welcome to Ellon, Aberdeenshire - The Gateway to Buchan

Whether visiting for a day, or staying for a while, the family town of Ellon is somewhere you will find a warm friendly welcome, modern shops and fine food all in a unique riverside setting only 30 minutes north of Aberdeen.

Ellon evolved around a ford on the River Ythan which was used for centuries as the main crossing point to and from the Buchan area. The river was once famous as a rich source of pearl mussels and produced amongst others a pearl "for beauty and bigness, the best that was at any time found in Scotland" - this pearl was presented to King James VI in 1620 and was subsequently set into the Scottish Crown.

Granted Burgh of Barony status in 1707, Ellon grew rapidly with regular markets attracting trade from far and wide, allowing the town to become a service centre to surrounding farmlands. By the late 20th Century, Ellon had become a busy commuter town supporting the Oil Industry in Aberdeen.
